convention. . >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is bay area news at 7:00. good evening. it's tuesday september 4th. i'm gasia mikaelian. this is bay area news at 7:00. a chp officer is hospitalized in critical condition tonight after being shot by a motorist during a traffic stop on interstate 680 in alamo. two officers shot and killed that suspect. the top story live at the onramp at 680 tells us investigators shut down that highway for nearly eight hours snarl lg traffic throughout the region. jana. >> that's right, gasia. take a look across the street there. you can see the onramp to 680 southbound still slow going at times but okay right now. we have learns that the injured officer is married with four

children and is right now on life support. the crime scene stretched out all ways. nfthers spread out looking for evidence. from news chopper 2 you can see the suspect's jeep wrangler. trying to pull over jeep for traffic stop this morning. the suspect was a man driving alone. he stopped just south to have rut ger road onramp and officials say wen one of the officers walked up to the jeep. >> the driver then pulled out a gun and shot at that officer severely injuring him. >> investigators say the second chp officer then opened fire on the man in the jeep. the suspect was taken to john muir medical center in walnut creek. >> we do have some dash cam video we're going to analyze. >> the shooting happened during morning commute. investigators say one person called 911 while several witness remained on the scene. investigators took those witness to the nearest police station to get their statement. the chp officer who shot the suspect was also interviewed.

what was not clear is the suspect opened fire in the first place. >> we are an extended family so we feel that deeply and our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and with his family. >> the chp officer who was rushed to john muir hospital, we understand has been on the force for six years all day officers have been going to the medical center in walnut creek just to lend their support. we have also learned the chp officer lives in solano county with his family. the chp has not released the suspect's name who passed away because they say they are still trying to contact his family. reporting live from walnut creek, ktvu channel 2 news. more details on that monommental traffic jam on 680. with the highway shut down many drivers tried to use surface streets to get around the backup only to find those roads filled with traffic, as well. one traveler left san jose at

ktvu channel 2 news on facebook and give us your comment. we're fol leing wild fires that's burning out of control in county. cal fire says burning on highway 16 east of clear lake. this shows you it's not far from where the wild fire nearly burned 8 thousand acres some three weeks ago. just the past 90 minutes here we've watched the flames from trees and brush and sending a huge plume of smoke into the air. highway 16 is closed between the town of rum see and yellow county and the junction of highway 20 and 16. the fire has burned through 200 acres. . next sunday marks the second anniversary of the deadly san bruno national gas pipeline disaster. today residents and lawmakers gathered during the epicenter of the blast. they say should be held accountable for the eight lives lost and dozens of homes destroyed. >> this is years and years and years of negligence, giving money to shareholders instead of investing in infrastructure, and

that's a real shame. >> a pda spokeswoman told us the utility has carried out billions of dollars in upgrade despite an additional 2.2 billion dollars of work set through 2014. the community will hold a remembrance event sunday at san bruno city park. students returned to a san francisco school today after it was flooded last week where a huge water main burst forcing that school to close. and our lady of visitation valley school. reported two inch water main broke outside that school on sunnydale avenue. officials with the san francisco public utilities commission say they still don't know what caused that to break. after more than two years of negotiations, california state university faculty members overwhelmingly approved a new contract. the faculty association says that 91% of those voting by mail okayed the deal. the contract covered about 23,000 professors and lectures in the system. four-year agreement does not contain a salary increase but

mostly preserve current benefits. now to where the police today released a photo of a gun that investigators say is the weapon drawn by a man who was fatally shot by two officers last sunday. police showed us the suspect's pel let gun next to the photo of an actual handgun. the suspect's weapon is of course on the right. officers say 23-year-old man pulled pellet gun from his waste band after the car he was riding in was stopped by police. officers opened fire killing mario ra mer row and wounding another man. detectives say ramero was a gang member on probation for carrying a concealed weapon. police have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow morning to discuss this case but we're talking to the police chief tonight and have more on tonight's 10:00 news on ktvu. >> a san francisco man is in custody tonight on murder charges in connection with the killing of a man in an apartment. police made this announcement at a press conference this afsh.

they arrested 45-year-old sunday after finding evidence that links him to the death of eric es ka lon. es ka lon was found dead in his apartment june 12th bound and gagged. investigators say it appears met him in a bar day bfrs the homicide. they say robbery sa likely motive in this case. two bay area control districts were planning to fog for mosquitos tonight to combat the spread of west nile virus. in the south bay. control spokesman says residents have some frequent questions. >> folks are concerned about their pets or washing lawn furniture, toys, what do to our swimming pool and the answer to all of sthoez there's really no need to be concerned. >> plans call for the south bay fogging started about 11:00 tonight continue until a.m. weather permitting. now eastern contra costa county fogging is expected to start within the hour here. officials there say that spraying should wrap up by

11:00. a new ride sharing service has launched in san francisco. it's easy to spot new lift, the new car service. just look for that fuzzy pink mustache. lift lets customers find a driver through a smart phone app. the company takes 20% cut donations. they check their drivers' insurance coverage as well as dmv and criminal record but calls the service an illegal taxi operation without the cost of a taxi medallion. regulators say they are look into this matter. demolition began today on a long time safe haven for san francisco's poor and hungry. >>. those are the sights and sounds of crews tearing down the dining room on joe's street in the tenderloin. the new facility to serve low income and homeless people is set to hope in two years. in the meantime meals are still being served in temporary

. a firefighter was hospitalized this morning after being injured on the job. if fire started at around 3: 30 a.m. at a carport.

fire department baaalon chief says the firefighter spept about an hour at the hospital being checked out for minor injury. the fire did an estimated $12,000 of damage and there's no word yet how it started. good news tonight in the recovery of san jose firefighter who suffered a heart attack battling a church fire. the firefighter has woken up from a coma and is now talking and joking with family and friends. >> fire trucks show up regularly at san jose regional medical center. crews have been visiting 44-year-old frank ryan who attended a medical induced coma after suffer ago heart attack last thursday. some fire fielthers including ryan's close friends have been sleeping on cots at the hospital. >> the first two days was really tough not knowing whether or not he was going to wake up and ever talk to me again. >> but now an upbeat mood among visitors. >> we' just all so excited. it's gist an incredible sigh of

classified information. the book was released today and was written by a former navy seal who says he took part in the action. an official review of the work sensitive and classified information. the military has threatened legal action against author for not submitting the book for a security review before publishing. a consumer alert tonight after nine internet payday lenders were cited by california state officials for illegally offering quick cash loans. the california state department of corporations says some unlicensed online lenders are gouging customers charging excessive interest rates and finance fees. in addition because customers give online lenders access to their bank accounts, some lenders are racking up multiple overdraft charges. state officials say always check with the department of korms on a lender's license status before you apply for a loan. . apple corporation today sent out invitations to a press conference that many expect will reveal a new version of the

could produce an excellent. . well, whether you're down in the santa cruz mountains or up in the ort bay. >> temperatures cool in some places, others about the same. cooled off today. as we head tomorrow, a little bit keerl. there's foog in the coast. a lot of fog actually. it's already obviously in the city. it's work its way across oakland in the next few hours. that's how it goes. the fog moves in a lot like it did last night. temperatures tomorrow look a lot like the highs from today. these are the numbers from today. look at them, memorize them, think about it. that's tomorrow. maybe a degree or two cooler in some places but you get the picture, kind of more of the same. the big change tomorrow will be high clouds increasing in the area coming in from some tropical moisture source that could bring up a few showers or maybe a few sprinkles and thundershowers wednesday or thursday. it's an outside chance but you've got to mention it because this kind of moisture this far north can be a problem. the computer model has the fog tomorrow morning wednesday morning at 5:00 a.m. then it

pulling it back and you'll see temperatures, the heat in the central valley. so as you get through your afternoon tomorrow in hayward or oakland you'll notice 70s, mid 70s, then 80s and low 90s kind of where they were today. tropical moisture here it comes. this is the first plug. another plug working its way up wednesday at 1:00. next plug comes in you go bill what are you talking about thunderstorms? the model is not showing it, little bit here, but watching these for a lot of years any time you get this much moisture this far news, weather, and sports this late in the season there's always a chance for that especially around the higher terrain. with the fire season being what it is, you can't mess with it. we're watching it closely. you see thursday around 2:00 you get a little activity. they don't want to see that either. we'll watch it for you. right now a ton of moisture moving our way that will add a lot of humidity and a lot of fog wednesday and thursday. i hope that's all. with that said let's be prepared for perhaps a sprinkle or thundershower. 81 in napa tomorrow, 87 in
